The Cardigan Coat

Below examples of faulty Cardigan coats:

A long-coated  tricolour. A cute puppy with feathering in the ears and showing the early stages of an incorrect, fluffy coat..

This cute puppy will have an incorrect long and soft coat. It
already shows some length on the front leg, with a little feathering along the base of the ear.
Puppy 3b as adult, showing coat length under the ribcage, note the fullness under the loin, and the definite wave along the topline.

A fluffy Pem for comparison

A marcelled ( wavy) coat.

This coat is somewhat soft and wavy, with the wave particularly noticeable along the topline towards the rear. With the hair on top of the tail much shorter than below, the tail almost finishes with a flag effect rather than a thick brush.. This blue merle also exhibits a softer coat with excessive length. Note the length of feathering on the tail and the wave along the topline. Also note that there is a definite ruff and some feathering at the bottom of the ears is just visible.

this coat is too long and fine on the tail, and probably about the ruff. However, the body coat lies flat, and there are no ear
fringes.

This blue merle exhibits a fuller coat, but is not a fluff (note
lack of fringing on the ears.) Certainly has some fullness of tail,
and some length under the front of the ribcage, also note the fullness over the loin and rear. Not an ideal coat.

This is a smooth coat, very short, and would probably be faulted in north America. Coat would provide little protection, is certainly not ideal but is possibly acceptable under KC/FCI breed standards.
